Jacksonville is one of the most underrated cities in Florida for photography. In a single afternoon you can go from a downtown skyline to a driftwood beach to a canopy of century-old oaks. As a Jacksonville photographer, these are the spots I come back to again and again — and what each one is best for.

A quick note before you plan: many parks, museums, and gardens require a permit or fee for professional photo sessions, so always check the location's current policy before booking a shoot.

01Riverside & Avondale

Best for: Portraits · Engagements · Brand

Jacksonville's historic heart — brick streets, Spanish-moss oak canopies, colorful storefronts, and murals. The mix of texture and greenery makes it endlessly versatile, whether you want moody and editorial or bright and lifestyle.

Tip: Shoot early morning to get the tree-lined streets without traffic or crowds.

02Southbank Riverwalk & Friendship Fountain

Best for: Brand · Urban Editorial · Couples

The best view of the downtown skyline across the St. Johns River. Friendship Fountain adds a dramatic water feature, and the Riverwalk gives you clean modern lines. Golden hour here is hard to beat.

Tip: Stay through blue hour — the skyline lights reflecting on the river are worth it.

03Big Talbot Island — Boneyard Beach

Best for: Editorial · Weddings · Concept

One of the most striking backdrops in Northeast Florida: salt-weathered, skeletal driftwood trees fallen across the sand. It's surreal and cinematic — perfect for high-concept and editorial work.

Tip: It's a short walk from the parking area, and low tide gives you the most beach to work with.

04Jacksonville Beach & the Pier

Best for: Lifestyle · Family · Golden Hour

Wide-open sand, the pier as a leading line, and soft coastal light. A classic for relaxed, sun-drenched portraits and family sessions.

Tip: Sunrise on the east-facing coast is magic — and far less crowded than sunset.

05The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

Best for: Formal Portraits · Weddings · Bridal

Manicured riverfront gardens, reflecting pools, and classical architecture make this one of the most elegant backdrops in the city — ideal for refined, timeless portraits.

Tip: The Cummer has specific photography policies — confirm session permissions and fees in advance.

06Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Best for: Nature · Adventurous Portraits · Couples

Dunes, coastal trails, and a quieter stretch of beach in Atlantic Beach. Great when you want natural texture and a sense of wilderness without leaving town.

Tip: There's an entry fee per vehicle — budget a little time to find the best light through the trees.

07Treaty Oak (Jessie Ball duPont Park)

Best for: Dramatic Portraits · Maternity · Editorial

A single, sprawling live oak estimated to be centuries old, with massive limbs that create a natural cathedral. One tree, endless compositions.

Tip: The canopy is dense — midday actually works well here thanks to the shade.

08Memorial Park, Riverside

Best for: Portraits · Engagements · Classic

A riverfront park with open lawns, a landmark bronze monument, and skyline views down the St. Johns. Clean, classic, and easy to work with.

Tip: Pairs perfectly with a Riverside/Avondale session — they're minutes apart.

09Brooklyn & Unity Plaza

Best for: Brand · Modern Editorial · Product

Contemporary architecture, clean concrete, and urban texture just outside Riverside — a great counterpoint when you want a sleek, modern brand look rather than something historic.

Tip: Overcast days are your friend here — soft light flatters the modern lines.

10St. Augustine (Day Trip)

Best for: Weddings · Romantic Editorial · Anniversaries

Just south of Jacksonville, the nation's oldest city offers cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial architecture, and coquina walls that feel worlds away. Worth the short drive for something truly romantic.

Tip: Historic districts get busy midday — early morning gives you the empty streets.
